“…According to the authors, regardless of their economic status, larger families may spend more on basic WASH facilities [25]. In the Beninese context, where some studies show a positive relationship between poverty and household size [49,50], a high number of people in the household is associated with high expenditure on water consumption. This could explain why some households choose to use unimproved facilities to limit the costs of using basic water facilities.…”

“…Specifically, this study (i) constructed a multidimensional poverty index; (ii) examined the dynamics of multidimensional poverty (MDP); and finally (iii) assessed the pro-poorness of growth in Benin between 2006 and 2011. This article deviates from studies on Benin that have employed income measures for poverty analysis (Attanasso, 2004) and have only analyzed multidimensional poverty without linking it with growth (Hodonou et al, 2010;Hounkpodote, 2009). The findings of the study will contribute significantly to national and international efforts to improve population well-being through reduced poverty.…”

“…Unfortunately, the literature on pro-poor growth is scant in Benin and indeed in many developing countries. Existing studies have only conducted separate analysis of income poverty (Attanasso, 2004) and multidimensional poverty (Hounkpodote, 2009) in Benin, with no emphasis on the linkages with economic growth trends in the country. Hodonou, Damien, Gninanfon, and Totin (2010) used a Markov model to analyze poverty dynamics in Benin.…”

“…In general, and at microeconomic level (since this is what interests us in the present study), the literature has mobilized econometric approaches that vary according to the objectives pursued. Broadly speaking, we can retain three main families of analysis depending on the variable used to measure poverty: analysis in terms of poor and nonpoor individuals (Attanasso, 2004), analysis in terms of level of well-being considered as a quantitative variable (Lachaud, 2000;Ndiaye, 2023) and analysis based on a multidimensional poverty index (Ndiaye, 2023).…”

“…The gender of the head of household (hgender); it is postulated that as female-headed households are generally more likely to be poor (Attanasso, 2004), the female gender of the head of the poor household will increase the relative poverty gap and its square.…”
