The object of the present work is the thermodynamic study of the proton ceramic fuel cell; particular attention is given to evaluate and maximize the generated power density by a single cell of Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cell (PCFC). In this work, the real potential is given by the difference between the Nernst potential and the reel polarizations generated during the PCFC operation. The activation polarization of the chemical reactions in the anode and the cathode, the losses due to the species concentration in both electrodes (anode and cathode) and the ohmic losses produced by the Joule's effect in the electrolyte and both electrodes (anode and cathode) are considered as the reel polarizations. The obtained results show that the PCFC power density is proportional to the variations of the operating temperature and the oxygen concentration in the oxidizer; conversely, it is inversely proportional to the evolutions of the fuel humidification and the thicknesses of the electrolyte.

Solid oxide cells (SOCs) hold considerable promise as devices for efficient, reversible conversion between chemical and electrical energy, facilitating a global shift toward renewable energy. Electrode performance is critical for SOC efficiency and durability and composite materials are key to developing high‐performance electrode catalysts. However, conventional mechanical mixing and infiltration methods often lead to large particle sizes, uneven distribution, and weak interfacial interactions, thus limiting electrochemical activity and longevity. Recent advancements have produced powerful new strategies for creating composite materials. These include metal exsolution and oxide segregation for fuel electrodes and one‐pot synthesis, segregation, phase reaction, and dynamic cation exchange for air electrodes. These techniques yield highly active, uniform nano‐catalysts and robust multi–phase interfacial contacts, significantly improving electrochemical activity and durability. This work reviews these advanced strategies and their applications in SOCs. It provides valuable insights for designing and optimizing SOC catalyst materials, accelerating the development of this vital energy conversion technology.

An integrated system, including a biomass gasifier, a solid oxide fuel cell, heat pipes, and an organic Rankine cycle, was modeled and validated. The system performance was assessed in two different cases based on: (a) oxygen-ion conducting electrolyte and (b) proton-conducting electrolyte solid oxide fuel cells. At low current densities, the system based on proton-conducting electrolyte cell presented larger values of power. In contrast, the system based on oxygenion conducting electrolyte cell had a better performance from power viewpoint at high current densities. This phenomenon was similar for energy and exergy efficiencies and emission. The comparative analysis revealed that the system based on oxygen-ion conducting electrolyte cell had higher power output than the system based on proton-conducting electrolyte cell (204.2 kW against 178.7 kW) at their optimum conditions, while the system based on protonconducting electrolyte cell presented lower emission (996.5 kg/MW h against 1560.7 kg/MW h). The TOPSIS method was utilized to solve the multi-criteria decision-making problem. The results indicated that the system based on proton-conducting electrolyte cell had a better performance than the system based on oxygen-ion conducting electrolyte cell.
