Analysis of Associations between 5-HTT, 5-HTR2A, and GABRA6 Gene Polymorphisms and Health-Associated Personality Traits

Abstract: The development of personality traits united by the notion of conscientiousness, should promote, along with reduction of anxiety, the physical and mental health. In order to detect the sources of conscientiousness and neuroticism formation, we evaluated associations between polymorphic markers of 5-HTT, 5-HTR2A, and GABRA6 genes and relevant scores of TCI questionnaire in a group of 369 volunteers. Associations of markers VNTR and LPR of 5-HTT gene and marker T1521C of GABRA6 gene with "self-directedness" and … Show more

“…12 Two other genes from the serotonin pathway have also been associated with personality, serotonin receptor 2 A (5-HTR2A) and serotonin receptor 2C (5-HT2C). 13,14 However, subsequent studies have been inconsistent in replicating these results, and the literature has been dominated by reports focused on a small number of candidate genes, including DRD and 5-HT.…”

“…Other genes implicated in personality development include the MAOA enzyme (Soliman et al, 2011;Urata et al, 2007), GABRA6 (Alfimova et al, 2010), BDNF (Suzuki et al, 2011;Terracciano et al, 2010a), and COMT Urata et al, 2007). Unfortunately, negative reports are ubiquitous (Jorm et al, 2000;Lee et al, 2008).…”

“…Moreover, several genetic studies in humans have shown relationships between human character traits and the serotonergic system [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Notably, these studies reported significant associations between self-directedness and various serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) genes, including primarily 5-HT transporter (5-HTT) or 5-HT 2A receptor (5-HT2AR) genes.…”
