Analysis of calculated and observed settlements of the silo on loess

Abstract: Subject reviewThis paper presents the analysis of the results of observed and calculated settlements for the silo, due to load and partial saturation of the loess. In a dry state loess has high strength and low compressibility, however, highly porous layers of loess due to saturation lose structure, reduce volume and strength extremely. This feature of loess is known as structural collapse, or hydro collapse, making it one of the meta-stable soils, which are very unfavourable in terms of foundation. During the… Show more

“…However, they were loess with different parameters, much lower q c in the range of 1.0-3.0 MPa and with a weight from 12.6 to 17.2 kN/m 3 , so much lower than the analysed ones. Santrač et al [70] conducted analyses of the settlement of a silo located in the loess near the village of Novi Sad in Serbia. They also obtained a settlement of more than 20 cm.…”

“…Serb loess was also subjected to oedometric test regarding the collapsibility. Meanwhile, observations of subsidence of the existing complex of agricultural buildings were performed [37]. The complex located near Feketić included a mill, an outhouse and an accompanying grain silos.…”
