Analysis of Choroidal Thickness Using Spectral-Domain OCT in Children With Unilateral Amblyopia

Abstract: This study demonstrated that choroidal thickness can be measured by spectral-domain OCT in children with amblyopia. Subfoveal choroidal thickness in amblyopic eyes was significantly thicker than in control eyes. The amblyopic process may involve the choroid, but not the macula. However, further evaluation is needed.

“…In the present study, we found that SFCT was significantly greater in amblyopic eyes compared with the normal fellow eyes (399.25 ± 4.944 µm vs. 280.58 ± 6.491 µm, respectively). This result is similar to the findings reported by Kara O . Moreover, using SSADA‐OCT, the CC was shown to atrophy in amblyopic eyes.…”

“…Kara et al [12] thought that amblyopia affected the process of postnatal maturation of the choroids and that amblyopia was associated with changes in choroidal function in humans. With split-spectrum amplitude-decorrelation angiography OCT, Guo et al [2] discovered that 86.4% of the amblyopic eyes displayed a blurry choroidocapillary network and that 68.2% of the amblyopic eyes had a dark atrophic patch.…”

“…Many other investigators have reported that the SFCT in amblyopic eyes was greater than that of the fellow eyes with hypermetropic anisometropic amblyopia [ 17 22 ]. However, there are only a few studies that have examined the choroidal thickness in accordance with the amblyopic cause [ 17 , 18 , 22 ]. Similar to that for retinal thickness, whether "amblyopia influences" [ 13 , 17 ] or "refraction influences" [ 40 ] are associated with the choroid thickening in amblyopic eyes remains controversial.…”
