Analysis of dog bite surveillance data, Volta Region, Ghana, 2020

Abstract: IntroductionDog bite is the second most common injury sustained by humans after snake bites, and it is amongst the top 12 causes of non-fatal injuries worldwide. Globally, 59,000 human deaths occur annually due to rabies, and 95% of these deaths occur in Asia and Africa. Dog bites remained a public health concern in Ghana, with three out of every 1000 incidence resulting in human rabies. Analysis of the surveillance data is key in understanding the burden of dog bites in the Volta region. This study describes … Show more

“…Generally, the observed bite incidence is very high and comparable with other rabies endemic settings like in South Africa (400) [ 78 ], Bangladesh (628) [ 79 ] and Pakistan (935) [ 80 ]. Dog bite incidences reported from African countries e.g., Ghana (248) [ 81 ], Nigeria (200) [ 82 ], Kenya (248) [ 83 ] and Tanzania (60) [ 84 ] were lower, but only relied on hospital-based surveillance data. Also, it was observed that 1.7% of HHs with dog bites in the past 2 years reported a total of seven victims dying from rabies in some parts of the NCAs.…”

“…Rabies, both Africa I and Africa II lineages, is enzootic in Ghana [2,14,15] with the domestic dog being the main vector [2]. The case positivity rate of rabies in Ghana ranges from 2% to about 92 % [16][17][18].…”

“…The case positivity rate of rabies in Ghana ranges from 2% to about 92 % [16][17][18]. While the human deaths due to rabies are not at all striking, they are not insignificant when compared to other communicable diseases on a national level [14,19]. However, unlike most of these communicable diseases, the case fatality rate associated with rabies is nearly 100 % [15].…”
