The curation design of cultural heritage sites, such as museums, influence the level of visitor satisfaction and the possibility of revisitation; therefore, an efficient exhibit layout is critical. The difficulty of determining the behavior of visitors and the layout of galleries means that exhibition layout is a knowledge-intensive, time-consuming process. The progressive development of machine learning provides a low-cost and highly flexible workflow in the management of museums, compared to traditional curation design. For example, the facility’s optimal layout, floor, and furniture arrangement can be obtained through the repeated adjustment of artificial intelligence algorithms within a relatively short time. In particular, an optimal planning method is indispensable for the immense and heavy trains in the railway museum. In this study, we created an innovative strategy to integrate the domain knowledge of exhibit displaying, spatial planning, and machine learning to establish a customized recommendation scheme. Guided by an interactive experience model and the morphology of point–line–plane–stereo, we obtained three aspects (visitors, objects, and space), 12 dimensions (orientation, visiting time, visual distance, centrality, main path, district, capacity, etc.), 30 physical principles, 24 suggestions, and five main procedures to implement layout patterns and templates to create an exhibit layout guide for the National Railway Museum of Taiwan, which is currently being transferred from the railway workshop for the sake of preserving the rail culture heritage. Our results are suitable and extendible to different museums by adjusting the criteria used to establish a new recommendation scheme.

The purpose of this paper is to present a conceptual framework to facilitate academics and practitioners’ decision making related to multi-objective facility layout planning (mFLP) by employing a bottom-up approach. Based on a literature survey framed in the mFLP context, this work identified and discussed a set of criteria that have become limitations of the traditional top-down approach. These criteria served as the basis to conceive the proposed conceptual framework. Our conceptual framework formalises FLP as a multi-objective problem by following the two traditional planning phases (block- and detailed phase) in reverse by a bottom-up approach, and by also integrating a third phase, called the refined phase, which has not previously been contemplated in the literature. Apart from identifying the inputs and outputs of each phase, the conceptual framework groups together several objectives related to mFLP that have been recently considered in the literature and formalises and contextualises them according to the planning phase in which they are involved. This is the first time that mFLP is addressed with a bottom-up approach.

Automation of logistics and production processes is one of the significant goals of the Industry 4.0 movement. Thus, this study uses the automatic data acquisition approach to automatically create Spaghetti Charts (SC), decrease the required time spent on collecting data, and provide a fast analysis (feedback). Smartphone technology used for drawing the automated spaghetti diagram has potential drawbacks related to safety, security, the privacy of organizations, and independency. So, Method Time Measurement 4.0 and RStudio software are used to collect the real data and draw the spaghetti chart, respectively, as an alternative solution. The experiment results for four scenarios (different Facility layouts and processes) prove that the approach is competitive, with cycle time reduction exceeding 40% less than the conventional facility layout and process plan. The proposed solution of the wearable device is promising for replacing smartphone technology with smart spaghetti chart systems.
