Analysis of Dynamic Surface Subsidence at the Underground Coal Mining Site in Velenje, Slovenia through Modified Sigmoidal Function

Abstract: Abstract:In underground coal mining engineering, one of the most important tasks is to monitor, predict and manage the surface subsidence due to underground coal excavation. The impact of underground mining excavation reflects as subsidence of the overlying strata and the formation of surface depressions soon after excavation. The surface subsidence is one of many natural processes that exhibit a progression from small beginnings that accelerate and approach a climax over time. When detailed data is lacking, a… Show more

“…The need for a time function model that accommodates subsidence nonlinearity has been a necessity in surface monitoring improvement within the exploration area of the VCM. The four parametric FNSE model has been successfully applied to optimize monitoring in old mining areas, at locations with less intensive subsidence processes and minor terrain reclamation [33]. FNSE is a product of various modifications of an unexponential algebraic sigmoid function, thus the fitting of the FNSE is much easier compared to similar exponential functions.…”

“…The geophysical prospecting is a useful, safe, economical, and rapid way to detect the mined-out areas. Therefore, the mined-out areas detection method is generally given priority to with geophysical prospecting, and drilling technical method validation is complementary [16].…”

“…Sci. 2018, 8, x FOR PEER REVIEW 2 of 11 In most coal fields in China, the mined-out regions are enriched by water, which led to frequent accidents and the serious destruction of ecological environment and serious threat to coal-mining practices [8,15,16]. Therefore the detection of the mined-out areas, especially the water-filled minedout area in advance, is one of the most important issues [17].…”

“…The mining subsidence mechanism of a metal mine with fractured blocky rock mass is different from a coal mine with a layered rock mass. The rock mass in a metal mine has a typical inhomogeneous and discontinuous self-stressed block-hierarchical structure because the morphology of ore body, geological structure, and mining methods in metal mines differ from those in coal mines [12,13]. The subsidence of overlaying strata in a metal mine is abrupt, and its subsidence, such as collapse pit and tubular or funnel collapse, is discontinuous.…”
