The review paper presents the use of algal extracts as safe and solvent-free components of plant growth biostimulants, dietary feed additives and cosmetics. Innovative technology that uses extracts obtained by supercritical CO2 extraction, as a method of isolation of biologically active compounds from algal biomass, is presented. An important part of the complete technology is the final formulation of the product. This enabled realization of the further step which was assessment of the utilitarian properties of the extract-based products. The extracts were analysed for the presence of biologically active molecules (e.g., plant hormones, polyphenols) which provide useful properties such as antioxidant, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. The bio-products were tested in germination tests and underwent field trials to search for plant growth biostimulatory properties. Tests on animals (laying hens experiments) were conducted to assess pro-health properties of new dietary feed supplement. Another application were cosmetic formulations (dermatological tests). The results of the application tests were very promising, however further studies are required for the registration of the products and successful implementation to the market.

Allelopathy is an interaction that releases allelochemicals (chemicals that act allelopathically) from plants into the environment that can limit or stimulate the development, reproduction, and survival of target organisms and alter the environment. Lemna minor L. contains chemicals that are allelopathic, such as phenolic acids. Chemical compounds contained in L. minor may have a significant impact on the development and the rate of multiplication and lead to stronger competition, which may enhance the allelopathic potential. Allelopathic potential may exist between L. minor and C. glomerata (L) Kütz. because they occupy a similar space in the aquatic ecosystem, have a similar preference for the amount of light, and compete for similar habitat resources. L. minor and C. glomerata can form dense populations on the water surface. Allelopathy can be seen as a wish to dominate one of the plants in the aquatic ecosystem. By creating a place for the development of extensive mats, an interspecific interaction is created and one of the species achieves competitive success. It is most effective as a result of the release of chemicals by macrophytes into the aquatic environment. Therefore, allelopathy plays a significant role in the formation, stabilization, and dynamics of the structure of plant communities.

Spirulina spp. is an alga from phylum Cyanobacteria that have multi-benefit due to their potential compounds like protein, carbohydrate, lipid, mineral, pigment, and phenolic compounds. Several types of research already describe Spirulina spp. capacity as an antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and antimicrobial agent, thus expand its application as a food source, cosmeceutical, and pharmaceutical compound. This study observed and evaluated Spirulina spp. extract as a potential source for cosmeceutical compound antioxidant and wound healing activities. Spirulina spp. was extracted with a variable solvent like water, ethanol, acetic acid, and buffer for 1 and 3 hours by the maceration method. Spirulina extract which give the highest antioxidants activity, was evaluated for wound healing, toxicity, and irritation. The result showed that Spirulina spp. water extracted for one hour using the maceration method have the highest antioxidant capacity with IC50 45.21 mg/mL, AEAC 0.12 mg Vit. C/g sample, phycocyanin content 6.478 µg/ml, and chlorophyll content 2.642 µg/ml. Treatment with 1% Spirulina extracts exhibits a higher wound healing effect rather than 10% Spirulina spp. extract, control group, and povidoneiodine 10%, on Wistar rat skin. Spirulina spp. water extract showed capacity as a whitening agent with inhibitory activity on tyrosinase were IC50 0.51 mg/mL. Spirulina spp. water extract had no irritation and toxicity effect on rabbit skin and mouse, respectively. This study showed that Spirulina spp. water extract is a potential source for antioxidant activity, wound healing capacity, and whitening agent; without toxicity and irritation effect. The result showed that Spirulina spp. extract could be potential value in cosmeceutical application.
