Analysis of Lower Extremity Alignment in Achondroplasia

Abstract: This study was designed to evaluate the reliability and reproducibility of frontal plane malalignment measurements using the mechanical axis deviation method in achondroplasia and to determine whether the patient's age has any influence on these measurements. A total of 150 anteroposterior standing radiographs of the lower extremities were randomly selected for the study. Radiographs were divided into three groups according to age: group 1, younger than 6 years of age; group 2, 6 to 10 years of age; group 3, o… Show more

“…In our study, five patients had a persistent pseudarthrosis of the fibula, but only three of these developed ankle valgus. These results are comparable to those of Inan [15] who noted seven cases of persistent fibular pseudarthrosis, with six ankle valgus, among 16 patients treated by intramedullary nailing, bone grafting and various subsequent procedures. Reestablishment of the integrity of the fibula decreases the load passing through the tibia and provides rotatory stress protection [2].…”

“…In our patient series, initial LLD was fully corrected in one patient, partially corrected in two and remained unchanged in one. No pseudarthrosis was observed at the lengthening site, as described by Inan [15].…”
