Analysis of Mechanical Stability for External Fixation Device in the Case of Anterior-Posterior Bending

Abstract: Analysis of mechanical stability for external fixation device Orthofix in the case of anterior-posterior bending is carried out in this paper. Device is applied to the lower leg for the case of unstable fracture. Real device is measured and 3D CAD model is developed. CAD model is used for numerical structural stress analysis which is carried out using CATIA V5 software. Results for displacements are obtained for selected critical places on the device and for the place of fracture. In addition, values of princi… Show more

“…The General Structural Analysis module was used in the next step of model creation to complete the FEM model and define the material for each component. The material of the bone fragments was assumed to be orthotropic with properties defined according to Table II [15][16]. After the materials were defined, the next step in FEM processing was the discretization of the model and the definition of the finite element type.…”

“…During the structural analysis, the displacement values at the point of loading were monitored (Figure 4), based on which the stiffness of the fixator structure is defined as the relationship between the load and the displacement of the bone at the point of impact of the load. The stiffness of the fixator structure according to AP bending (Cp) is calculated using the following relation [25]:…”
