Analysis of Segregation Data for a Dry Mineral-Based Construction Materials Plant

Abstract: In this work, segregation data for seven commercial products at a dry mineral-based construction materials plant have been analyzed. The segregation manifests itself as an increase of the fines content to unacceptable levels at the end of complete emptying from a surge silo situated upstream of packing. Results for preliminary tests for sifting segregation and fluidization show the difficulty in estimating a priori the segregation patterns observed in practice. Knowledge of the segregation mechanisms occurring… Show more

“…Despite significant research effort, the processes that give rise to segregation are yet to be fully described and understood [5]. Segregation is not only of deep scientific interest, it is also of practical relevance in fields, such as agriculture [6,7], geophysics [8][9][10][11] and engineering [12,13]. The primary objective in many industrial processes is to achieve complete particle mixing, rather than an undesired separation and clustering of particles [2,14].…”

“…Segregation phenomena are influenced by apparent properties of particles, density, size and rigidity [88][89][90][91] . Progresses in the research on granular segregation are important for industrial development, such as geophysics [92][93][94] , agriculture engineering [95] and other industries [96,97] . The main objective in numerous industrial practices is to attain particle mixing, not separating or forming particles clusters [88,98] .…”
