Analysis of skin testing and serum‐specific immunoglobulin E to predict airway reactivity to cat allergens

Abstract: Levels of serum-specific IgE to cat allergens and intradermal ST can be used to diagnose and treat more accurately asthmatic patients sensitized to cat epithelium when there is uncertainty about cat epithelium causality.

“…In children, a wheal size of ≥4.5 mm showed a sensitivity of 75% and a specificity of 86% to predict an EAR (AUC 0.85) . In adults, a positive SPT (wheal size 3 mm) failed to discriminate between challenge‐positive and challenge‐negative patients . In HDM allergies, the skin sensitivity did not significantly contribute to the prediction of an EAR .…”

“…Even in patients who are allergic to cats, the predictive value of the clinical history to detect cat allergy was low . Possible reasons for the modest degree of accuracy might include multiple sensitizations and the occurrence of several different allergens together . Allergen challenges allow for the demonstration of both the presence of allergen‐specific IgE and the causal role of the allergen .…”

“…The IDT results of 62 allergen extracts on 3,335 patients in a three-year period (2001–2003) are shown in Figure 1 (children less than three years old were excluded). In our department, IDT has always been exhibited to be effective and safe and was reported to be diagnostically better than the skin prick test [8]. Nevertheless, informed consent for testing was obtained from all patients or their guardians, and the current study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University.…”

“…We hypothesized that perennial allergic conjunctivitis might be mediated by specific IgG antibodies associated with indoor allergens. Although allergens derived from cats are a major cause of indoor allergen-induced allergic disease [10], the relation between cat allergens and allergic conjunctivitis has not been described previously. Accordingly, the aims of the present study were (1) to compare sensitization to cat allergens among healthy subjects and patients with seasonal or perennial allergic conjunctivitis, (2) to compare the levels of specific IgG and IgE antibodies for cat allergens with cutaneous reactivity to cat allergens in patients who had perennial allergic conjunctivitis, and (3) to evaluate the relation between serum levels of specific IgG for cat allergens and the features of perennial allergic conjunctivitis.…”
