Cassava farmers and marketers are faced with problems bothering on poor pricing of the product locally, with attendant negative implications on their profitability. Hence, this study focused on the profitability of cassava marketing in rural and urban markets in Edo South Agro-Ecological Zone, Edo State, Nigeria. A three-stage sampling procedure was used in drawing up a sample of 161 cassava marketers from seven purposely selected major cassava markets. Data collected with the aid of a well-structured questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics, budgetary analysis and regression analysis. Cassava tuber marketing was shown to be profitable in the study area with a monthly gross margin of ₦29,061.4 and a return per Naira invested of 0.29 (29%) for rural marketers. Urban marketers had a mean monthly gross margin of ₦19, 961.3 per marketer and a return per Naira invested of 0.32 (32%). Rural markets were found to be more efficient (576.78%) than urban markets (168.84%). The major factor militating against the farmers and marketers in their adopted management practices was having little money to spend. It is concluded that in order to improve the profitability of cassava tuber marketers in the study area, measures should be taken to cut down on the cost of transportation.

Content of YouTube videos on cassava production and processing in Nigeria

This study examined content of YouTube videos on cassava production and processing posted in Nigeria between 2009 and 2019. Purposive sampling method was used in selecting 155 YouTube videos with cassava production and processing contents. Primary data on video source, content, duration, quality, number of views, subscribers, likes, comments, presentation format and year of upload were obtained by watching these videos. Data were analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, standard deviation. Many (53.5%) of the videos were on processing of cassava, while most (80.0%) of the videos were relatively recent (2014 - 2019). Private individuals (38.7%) and media houses (34.2%) were the main sources of videos on cassava production and processing on YouTube. The major content of the video was on agronomic practices in cassava production (12.9%) and value addition (11.0%). Also, 66.0% of the videos had video description (descriptive texts), 36.8% had mobilizing information while 52.3% had a video quality of 720p. Furthermore, 72.9% of the videos had between 1-to-7-minute runtime and these videos had more likes than dislikes with mean values of 92.8 and 5.6 respectively. The mean number of views, subscribers and comments were 11,138.1, 179,537.6 and 13.6, respectively. The presentation patterns in the videos were in form of news (24.5%) and documentary (20.0%). YouTube videos on cassava production and processing were well viewed with a substantial number of subscribers. More YouTube videos on cassava production and processing should be produced with varied contents by different stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

Inadequate information about the performance of a technology can hinder its uptake. The aim of this paper was to provide a thorough examination of the performance gap between the best bet system of rice intensification (BB-SRI) and farmers’ practices (FP) in Zamfara State, Nigeria. Using a multi-stage sampling technique, a sample of 300 rice farmers were selected from the Bakolori Irrigation Scheme, Zamfara State, among which 40 farmers (13%) used the BB-SRI while the remaining 260 farmers (87%) used FP. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, farm budget technique, additive-multiplicative stochastic frontier translog profit function and propensity score matching (PSM) estimator. The findings revealed that yield increased from 5,285 kg/ha with FP to 12,735 kg/ha with BB-SRI, an increase of 141%. Rice production was profitable under both FP and BB-SRI with return on investment (ROI) increasing from 2.64 using FP to 6.66 under BB-SRI, an increase of 152%. There was evidence of profit inefficiency in rice farming since the profit could still be raised by 7% and 21% using FP and BB-SRI, respectively. The yield, ROI and profit efficiency gaps between the BB-SRI and FP ranged from 7,452 kg/ha to 7,510 kg/ha, 4.02 to 4.05, and from 0.08 to 0.09, respectively. We recommend therefore that important investments and training in SRI should be considered as a top priority for the transformation and sustainability of the rice sector in order to ensure its successful promotion, uptake and diffusion across other rice producing States in Nigeria.
