Analysis of the impact of urban summer high temperatures and outdoor activity duration on residents' emotional health: Taking hostility as an example

Abstract: The combined effect of global warming and the heat island effect keeps the temperature of cities rising in the summer, seriously threatening the physical and mental health of urban residents. Taking the area within the Sixth Ring Road of Beijing as an example, based on Landsat remote sensing images, meteorological stations, and questionnaires, this study established a relational model between temperature and hostility and then analyzed the changes in the emotional health risk (hostility) in the study area and … Show more

“…PA in hot conditions increases the risk of Exercise Heat Stroke (EHS) (75) and affects β-activities in most areas of the brain(76). The prevalence of negative emotions increases signi cantly when a person is outdoors in the heat for more than 120 min (77). Older adults with hypertension or diabetes, when physically active for long periods in hot environments, may exhibit tremendous cellular stress, leading to cellular damage(78).…”

“…Increasing vegetation is one strategy to mitigate urban regional climate change and provide multiple ecosystem services (Jenerette et al 2011). However, the impact of vegetation on economic, water, and social fairness varies significantly between different communities and requires management through prudent environmental policies (Huang et al 2022). Additionally, the Birmingham government in the UK advocates incorporating the urban heat island into the scope of urban heat risk assessment, emphasizing the undeniable health risks associated with the urban heat island effect (Tomlinson et al 2011).…”

“…Examples are the Mediterranean region, Mashad (Iran), Delhi (India), Doha (Qatar), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Cairo (Egypt), Phoenix and Las Vegas (USA). Hot weather and extreme temperature are believed to worsen wellbeing and mental health, causing a worse night sleep due to higher night-time ambient temperature [22], depression [23], an increase in hostility [24], in suicide rate and hospitalization for mental conditions [25 ▪ ].…”
