Analysis of the subgrade stiffness effect on the behaviour of ground‐supported concrete slabs

Abstract: This paper confirms that the structural behaviour of groundsupported slabs is a non-linear function of the structural properties of slabs as well as the supporting soil. The findings reported emphasize that the suggested equations used in design codes pay insufficient attention to the effect of the supporting ground stiffness within the context of the mechanical behaviour of slabs as far as ductility is concerned. The results presented demonstrate that ground stiffness has a significant effect on the ductility… Show more

“…Interaction of foundations and subsoil has been the research subject at the University of Greenwich, UK for many years. In 2012, Alani and Aboutalebi published article [2] about observation of the effect of the rigidity of the foundation base on the mechanical behaviour of concrete slabs. This analysis was conducted on slab model with dimensions 3.0 x 3.0 x 0.2 m. Alani and Aboutalebi presented their results of another experimental measurement also in 2014, in article [1].…”

“…Hence, there is no tuning of material and numerical parameters to capture the mechanisms and the failure load. Often numerical analyses of slabs on ground focus on ultimate capacities and the influence of slab size and material parameters [19,20]. Through a parametric study, the finite element model has been used to assess the influence of the tensile strength and the subgrade stiffness on the results.…”

“…Unambiguous description of geological profile is very difficult. Experimental measurements of subsoil-structure interaction are carried out throughout the world (Aboutalebi et al, 2014;Alani and Aboutalebi, 2012;Huang et al, 2013) and also in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Methology, results and conclusions of the performed loading tests performed out at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, VŠB-TU Ostrava are described in Buchta and Mynarcik, 2014;Janulikova and Stara, 2013).…”
