A participant conducting a trial during our first experiment (b).Abstract-We present the results of two user studies on the perception of visual variables on tiled high-resolution wall-sized displays. We contribute an understanding of, and indicators predicting how, large variations in viewing distances and viewing angles affect the accurate perception of angles, areas, and lengths. Our work, thus, helps visualization researchers with design considerations on how to create effective visualizations for these spaces. The first study showed that perception accuracy was impacted most when viewers were close to the wall but differently for each variable (Angle, Area, Length). Our second study examined the effect of perception when participants could move freely compared to when they had a static viewpoint. We found that a far but static viewpoint was as accurate but less time consuming than one that included free motion. Based on our findings, we recommend encouraging viewers to stand further back from the display when conducting perception estimation tasks. If tasks need to be conducted close to the wall display, important information should be placed directly in front of the viewer or above, and viewers should be provided with an estimation of the distortion effects predicted by our work-or encouraged to physically navigate the wall in specific ways to reduce judgement error.

With the ever increasing amount of digital information, users desire more screen real estate to process their daily computing work, and might well benefit from using a wallsize large high-resolution display instead of a desktop one. Unfortunately, we know very little about users' behaviors when using such a display for daily computing. We present a week-long study that investigates large display use in a personal desktop computing context by comparing it with single and dual desktop monitor use. Results show users' unanimous preference for using a large display: it facilitates multi-window and rich information tasks, enhances users' awareness of peripheral applications, and offers a more "immersive" experience. Further, the data reveals distinct usage patterns in partitioning screen real estate and managing windows on a large display. Detailed analysis of these results provides insights into designing interaction techniques and window management systems more suited to a large display.

Nowadays, clusters of interconnected workstations have become a common solution for powering large composite displays, or "cluster display walls", to visualize high resolution images. Our paper is focused on analyzing a specific cluster display wall developed by Google, named Liquid Galaxy, made up of heterogeneous commodity hardware with different degrees of heterogeneity, running master-slave (Google Earth) and clientserver (Quake III Arena) multimedia applications. With this in mind, we define and test different scenarios, representing the behavior of many kinds of users. Our results show that the CPU, memory and network are good enough to execute the client-server application, while, depending on the user behavior, the external network constitutes the bottleneck of the system in Google Earth. So, the master-slave application has focused our attention. Likewise, in order to analyze the users' point of view when interacting with Google Earth in the Liquid Galaxy, we define a new metric, named Visualization Rate (VR), which enables a relationship to be established between the user experience and the platform performance. In order to set the minimum acceptable value of the VR parameter according to users perception, we carried out different tests with real users. Then, this minimum threshold was compared with the VR value obtained from the automated benchmarking performed afterwards on clusters with different heterogeneity degrees. Finally, we analyzed the VR trend when the Liquid Galaxy is scaled from 3 up to 8 nodes in both the homogeneous and heterogeneous architectures to study the scalability of the system.
