Analysis on the Chlorophyll Content of Commercial Green Leafy Vegetables

Abstract: The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the chlorophyll content of green leafy vegetables found commercially and carry out a comparative investigation between in vivo and in vitro data. The chlorophyll of green leafy vegetable can be used as visible parameters of the quality of vegetables during storage, since it will be degraded gradually along with post-harvest senescence. Therefore, the development of reliable in vivo chlorophyll measurement should be advantageous rather than visual observation… Show more

“…We suggest that the different assayed doses of K + did not affect the photosynthetic process of the plant, and therefore all of them were sufficient for normal development, allowing not only the maintenance of the osmotic potential in cells, but also the stomata opening and closing. K + is transported through the membranes of guard cells, opening it when increasing its concentration, which is influenced the enzymatic activation and therefore a greater concentration of this nutraceutical compound [35].…”

“…Some bioactive compounds in vegetables are vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and pigments (chlorophylls and carotenoids) (Limantara et al, 2015). Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is one of the most widely vegetables consumed in the world since it is a good source of fiber, but has a low in calories, fat, and sodium.…”

“…As an index of the chlorophyll content, the greenness of new fully expanded leaves was estimated using a SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter. The SPAD values are highly correlated to chlorophyll content (R 2 ≈ 0.9) and follow exponential or second-order polynomial functions [15].…”
