Analysis on the green total factor productivity of pig breeding in China: Evidence from a meta-frontier approach

Abstract: The pig industry occupies an extremely significant position in agriculture. The input cost, output income and the amount of pollution emitted by pig farming of different scales are unequal. It is of great practical importance to reduce pollutant emission by improving efficiency for the development of hog breeding industry in China. With the addition of undesirable output, this paper uses the Slack Based Measure- Metafrontier Malmquist Luenberger index model considering scale heterogeneity to explore the evolut… Show more

“…This has driven the development of PGTFP in each region. Consistent with existing studies, PGTFP did not increase nationwide or in all regions over time (Zhong et al, 2022b). Rather, it mostly fluctuated in phases, especially over 2005-2021, which was affected by the spread of unexpected diseases such as swine flu, African swine fever, and COVID-19.…”

“…They found that the pig breeding industry shifted to the central region without a corresponding increase in efficiency. Zhong et al (2022b) analyzed the differences in green pig breeding between East and West China based on dominant pig breeding regions, revealing significantly higher PGTFP in the West than in the East and Central regions owing to the different transportation and environmental locations between these regions. Wang et al (2020) analyzed pig breeding efficiency between farms and emphasized the need to narrow the farm gap to improve efficiency.…”

“…On the contrary, large-scale farmers have advantages such as information and management [20], and their profitability [37] and risk management are sustainable. Therefore, large-scale farming contributes to stable hog production [20,38]. After the listing of hog futures, farmers can utilize hog futures to hedge their risks and promote the expansion of production scale.…”
