Anatomic markers for the retrospective and prospective evaluation of pathology involving the feto - placental and utero - placental circulatory systems inside human placenta. Forensic implications

Abstract: Authors studied a large number of human placenta (750) and they identified and nominalized four anatomic markers as morphologic and functional indicators for the structures inside the utero-placental and feto-placental circulatory systems: umbilical cord, subchorial veins thrombosis for the feto-placental circulatory system, perivillous fibrin deposition and retroplacental hematoma for utero-placental circulatory system. These markers contribute to the knowledge of the mechanisms for intrauterine asphyxiation,… Show more

“…Phenotype transformations that appear during placental genesis are anatomic markers, irreversibly stocked inside its vascular and/or villous structures (Dragoi et al , 2010; Zimta et al 2012 [9]; Melinte et al 2015 [10]; Fox 1967, [11], 1970 [12]). They assure the placenta role of information storage, regarding determinant factors of both fetalplacenta and maternal-placenta blood circulations perturbations.…”

“…On the next day, the sections were washed in 1× PBS, and a species-specific Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP)-labeled secondary antibody was added for one hour [ImmPRESS™ HRP Goat Anti-Mouse Immunoglobulin G (IgG) (Peroxidase) Polymer Detection Kit, Vector Lab]. After further washing in PBS, the signal was detected with 3,3’-Diaminobenzidine (DAB; Histofine ® DAB-3S kit), and finally the slides were briefly counterstained with Mayer’s Hematoxylin, dehydrated, cleared, and placed under the coverslip with a Xylene-based mounting medium (Sigma-Aldrich) [ 15 , 16 , 17 ].…”

“…The evaluation of these "potentially toxic" levels is still unknown, as long as the fetal pharmacokinetics and the fetal pharmacodynamics are also unknown [9]. Maternal and/or fetal blood flow can be altered during gestation, in the context of umbilical cord anatomic variations (length, hypo-or hypercoiling), the thrombosis of subchorial vessels and the structure of perivillous fibrin deposition [10].…”
