Aneurysm Treatment – a Neuroradiologic Success Story

Abstract: This short review portrays the treatment of cerebral aneurysms from the very early surgical beginning to current endovascular multimodal therapy. The evolution to today's mainly nonoperative treatment of aneurysms illustrates the enormous progress of interventional neuroradiology, which has attained its outstanding success through the concurrence of deeper understanding and knowledge of diseases, technical development, and endovascular manual skills. “…Aneurysms are vascular malformations of extreme importance in the group of cerebrovascular diseases, given that they represent the most common cause of spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage and are responsible for nearly a quarter of all intracranial hemorrhages 12 . The treatment of intracranial aneurysms may be performed by microsurgical clipping or endovascular coil embolization.…”

“…Besides aneurysm clipping, endovascular coil embolization is a frequently applied technique for the treatment of ruptured cerebral aneurysms [3,4]. During digital subtraction angiography (DSa), re-SaH can be observed as an extravasation of contrast agent from the aneurysm.…”
