Aneurysmal bone cyst: a review

Abstract: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign locally destructive bone neoplasm composed of multi-loculated blood-filled cystic spaces. The most common sites of involvement are the meta-diaphysis of the long bones and posterior elements of the vertebrae. Secondary, ABC-like changes can complicate a variety of other benign and malignant primary bone neoplasms, including giant cell tumor, fibrous dysplasia, and osteosarcoma. About two-third of primary ABCs have a rearrangement of the USP6 gene, which… Show more

“…[ 25 ] However, today, due to molecular findings such as the TRE17/USP6 gene (abnormalities of the short arm of chromosome 17), ABC tumors are considered neoplasms. [ 3 , 4 , 31 , 33 , 49 ] Spinal ABC tumors can present with nocturnal pain. Patients may also experience paresthesia, paresis, or radicular pain extending to the lower extremities, abdomen, or chest wall.…”

“…The condition is rare, accounting for 2.5% of all bone tumors. [ 5 ] The occurrence of ABC does not differ by sex, and in most cases, it occurs in the first 2 decades of life, when the skeletal system is not yet fully developed. [ 6 ] Previously, ABC was believed to occur as a reaction to traumas or a reactive lesion due to underlying vascular events.…”
