Aneurysmal bone cysts.A clinicopathologic study of 66 cases

Abstract: Sixty‐six cases of aneurysmal bone cyst were reviewed clinically, pathologically and radiologically. Different therapies, including curettage, block excision, amputation and radiation therapy, and a new treatment, cryosurgery, were employed. Cryosurgery, which avoids the growth and neoplastic complications of radiation therapy and the loss of bone with block excision, had an extremely low rate of recurrence when compared to simple curettage. In manometric studies of 6 cysts, 3 had elevated vascular pressures a… Show more

“…7,9 Interestingly, an inversion of chromosome 17 [inv(17)(p13q11.2-12)] involving similar breakpoints was observed in case 37 of the present study (Figure 3). Although rearrangements of the 17q12 band have not been reported as [3],del(7)(q32) [3],À9 [3],+12 [2],+13 [2], inv(16)(p13.1q24) [4],À17 [3],À19 [4],À20 [3] Current study prominent in mesenchymal tumors, the 17q12 locus has received considerable attention because of the localization of the Her-2neu (a.k.a. c-erbB-2, erythroblastic leukemia viral oncogene homolog 2) and RARA (retinoic acid receptor, alpha) genes to this chromosomal band.…”

“…2,3 Histopathologically, the lesion is composed of varying sized blood-filled spaces separated by connective tissue septa containing bony trabeculae and giant osteoclastic cells. 4 Aneurysmal bone cysts are frequently locally aggressive and exhibit a strong tendency to recur. 5 Relatively few cases of aneurysmal bone cyst have been cytogenetically characterized.…”

“…Despite best efforts at curettage, clinical series have shown highly variable recurrence rates, with some series showing rates as high as 59 % [29]. As a result, various adjuvants have evolved to reduce recurrence including the use of cement, high-speed burr, argon beam, phenol, and cryotherapy.…”

“…Five months after the third surgery, the patient assisted to a follow-up appointment with hemifacial contour deformity and intraoral swelling again, suggesting pathology recurrence (Figs. 4,5). Once more, surgical correction was performed intraorally, but this time, after raising a mucoperiosteal flap over the remnant alveolar ridge, the lesion showed osseous consistency without evidence of soft tissue, and the previously inserted reconstruction plate was almost covered by bone (Fig.…”

“…The etiopathogenesis of this entity remains controversial, but it has been described as a consequence of traumatism, as hemodynamic alteration, or as a secondary phenomenon associated to the presence of primary bone lesions [4]. It can be classified as primary or secondary, depending on the presence or absence of associated preexisting histopathological conditions, such as the ossifying fibroma or the central giant cell granuloma, among others, being the first and the most frequently involved [5].…”
