Angels on a pinhead: new research networks for nanotechnology

Abstract: Nanotechnology promises to be the defining science of the 21st century. With its integration of the organic and inorganic worlds, it represents more than simply a continuation of the principles of microtechnology. Because of this it requires new structures of R&D management, and new communication processes. A number of recent foresight studies identify potential future applications for European industry and point to the strengths and weaknesses of Member States. But only new interdisciplinary research networks… Show more

“…All these foresight activities aim to promote national competitiveness in the global nanotechnology race, and no country can afford to be left behind. In addition to the above consensus on nanotechnology research topics, suggestions have also been investigated on: future nanotechnology research in many aspects (Bachmann et al , 2001), how to bridge the gap between nanotechnology foresight research and market research (Malanowski and Zweck, 2007), and how to reduce the democratic deficit in institutional foresight program (Loveridge and Saritas, 2009). These provide a more detailed and practical way of allowing the results of nanotechnology foresight activities to be put into practice.…”

“…Nanobiotechnology is a combination of these two technologies and plays an important role in the development and application of many useful tools and technologies in life science-related research. [1][2][3][4][5] In recent years, biological methods that non-toxic, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly have become the focus of interest compared to physicochemical nanoparticle synthesis methods. [6,7] The synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) under purely "green" principles can be achieved by using an environmentally compatible solvent system with environmentally friendly reducing and stabilizing agents.…”

“…Nanotechnology remains a remarkable illustration of rising advances in this century (Bachmann et al 2001). Several financial experts predicted that this technology would turn out to be booming by 2025 (Glenn and Gordon 1997).…”
