Angiogenesis is a Link Between Atherosclerosis and Tumorigenesis: Role of LOX-1

Abstract: Angiogenesis is defined as the formation of new blood vessels sprouting from pre-existing vessels. It plays an important role not only in physiological situations such as embryonic vascular development and wound healing, but also in pathological conditions including atherogenesis and evolution and spread of certain tumors. Lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1), a receptor for oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), is mainly expressed in endothelial cells. It has diverse physiologi… Show more

“…Angiogenesis is defined as the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels, and is essential for the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to cells that are distant from existing blood vessels (5). Physiological angiogenesis is a sequence of cellular events comprising vascular initiation, formation, maturation, remodeling and regression, which are regulated to supply tissue requirements (5)(6)(7).…”

“…3 In the past decade, multiple studies have indicated that LOX-1 has important role in atherogenesis, particularly in early stages of disease pathogenesis, through its binding and internalisation of circulating ox-LDLs. 11 Studies have also implicated LOX-1 in angiogenesis and as an immune receptor, 12,13 but these roles are less clearly understood.…”

“…It plays an important role in many physiologic and pathophysiological processes [1,2]. Angiogenesis occurs in the hearts after ischemia, and is thought to be a response to proinflammatory triggers released during ischemia [3].…”
