Anisotropic antiferromagnetic spin chains in a transverse field: Reentrant behavior of the staggered magnetization

Abstract: We investigate one-dimensional S = 1/2 and S = 1 antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains with easy-axis anisotropies in a transverse field. We calculate both the uniform magnetization and the staggered magnetization, using a variant of the density matrix renormalization group method. We find that the staggered magnetizations exhibit reentrant behavior as functions of the transverse field, where the competition between the classical Néel order and the quantum fluctuations plays an important role. We also discuss … Show more

“…In the case of classical anisotropic spin chains this effect has been studied more than two decades ago 24 . However, in the case of the antiferromagnetic XXZ quantum chain this problem is still the subject of intensive recent studies 25,26,27,28 . In this paper, we study the effect of a uniform transverse magnetic field on the ground state phase diagram of a two-leg ladder with anisotropic, ferromagnetically interacting legs coupled by antiferromagnetic interleg exchange.…”
