Anisotropic magnetization-induced second harmonic generation in Fe/Au superlattices

Abstract: The anisotropic nonlinear magneto-optical response from Fe/Au͑001͒ superlattices is studied. Perfect singlecrystalline order through the whole thickness of the multilayer is observed. The magneto-optical signals are measured in both the longitudinal and transversal configurations. A strong fourfold anisotropy of nonlinear Kerr rotation angle is demonstrated, in addition to the anisotropic second harmonic intensity changes. The results are described in terms of a simple phenomenological model, that involve both… Show more

“…This allows for both the eee and eem SHG signals discussed above. Although it might seem unusual to have interference between a bulk eeq signal and a magnetic surface eee/eem signal, this has been observed in Fe/Au superlattices [42], with the origin of the interference attributed to the complex nature of the energy denominator as we discussed above. This seems to us a realistic possibility, and could be tested experimentally.…”

“…The description might also be improved, if quadrupole contributions to the SHG intensity would also be included into our model. 63,64 Two other mechanisms possibly giving rise to the discrepancies may be considered in the following. The first of them FIG.…”

“…45 The crystallographic electricdipole contribution from such structure with fourfold symmetry (that corresponds to the 4/mmm point-group symmetry) is described by a third-rank tensor and is therefore isotropic. On the other hand, both magnetic electric-dipole and crystallographic electric-quadrupole terms give an anisotropic response, indicating the presence of higher-order contributions.…”
