Annual Variation in Seedfall, Postdispersal Predation, and Recruitment of a Neotropical Tree

Abstract: Knowledge of the dynamics of seed production and seedling recruitment of individual tree species is crucial for a complete understanding of tropical forest dynamics, yet multiyear studies on the seed and young seedling stages of tropical trees are virtually nonexistent. In a 4-yr study of the understory tree Faramea occidentalis on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, I quantified natural levels of viable seedfall, seedling emergence, and seedling establishment, and experimentally estimated postdispersal seed predat… Show more

“…For Pterocarpus, Pentaclethra and Carapa only initial seedling height, number of leaflets and seedling density were tested in the model. The proportional hazards model is multivariate and semi-parametric, and is particularly powerful in examining the effect of explanatory variables on survival times when dealing with right-censored data, i.e., some of the individuals were still alive at the end of the study (Schupp 1990;Hosmer and Lemeshow 1999). A posteriori Tukey test was used for all group comparisons in seed size means across topographical sites and for the effects of site on mean survival of Prioria seedlings.…”
