Psoriasis is a long-lasting inflammatory skin disease with an autoimmunological and immunometabolic background. The latest European data indicate that the occurrence of psoriasis in children ranges from 0.7% to 2.1%. Despite distinct clinical characteristics, this disease continues to cause diagnostic difficulties and is often incorrectly diagnosed. The goal of this article is to present the course of psoriasis in children, basic diagnostic techniques, including dermoscopy, influence of the disease on the quality of life and risk of co-morbidity development. The therapeutic approcach to childhood psoriasis is presented. StreSzCzenieŁuszczyca jest przewlekłą chorobą zapalną skóry o podłożu autoimmunologicznym i immunometabolicznym. Według najnowszych danych europejskich zapadalność na łuszczycę u dzieci wynosi 0,7-2,1%. Pomimo charakterystycznego obrazu klinicznego schorzenie to nadal sprawia trudności diagnostyczne i bywa mylone z innymi chorobami. Celem niniejszej pracy jest omówienie odmienności przebiegu łuszczy-cy u dzieci, podstaw diagnostyki z uwzględnieniem obrazu dermatoskopowego, wpływu na jakość życia i sferę emocjonalną, zagrożenia rozwojem innych chorób, zwłaszcza dziecięcego zespołu metabolicznego oraz odmienności stosowanych metod terapeutycznych.

Psoriasis is an inherited chronic inflammatory papulosquamous disorder with a variable clinical spectrum affecting about 0.5% to 2% of children and adolescence. In spite of all performed researches around the world for seeking better treatments with fewer adverse effects to control the disease, there is still no cure for psoriasis. Treatment of psoriasis in children is very conservative and many therapies used for adults may not be appropriate for children due to possible long-term or delayed adverse effects. A wide range of therapeutic options are existed including; topical therapy, phototherapy, chemotherapy, systemic therapies and biologic therapies. Here in, because of the lack of data in this specific field of dermatology, we decided to review the current therapies of childhood psoriasis.

Psoriasis starts in the first two decades of life in about one-third of patients. Initially the diagnosis may be difficult because of atypical or mild involvement. Plaque psoriasis is the most frequent type in children, just as in adults. However, lesions are often smaller, thinner and less scaly. Treatment of childhood psoriasis represents a special challenge to dermatologists since many therapeutic agents are not approved and guidelines are generally lacking for this age group. Apart from clinical type, severity of the disease and patient's age, the choice of treatment must be based on safety concerns and accessibility of treatment. We herein focus on the peculiarities of clinical presentations and on the management of psoriasis in children and adolescents.
