Another Example of Phenotype Rhnull

Abstract: Blooddonor typing provided the sixth example of a person with the rare phenotype, Rh..,,. Serologic investigation of the propositus and his family gives indirect support for the theory that the homozygous state of amorphic genes ( X o r / X o r ) at a locus independent of Rh can block the production of the precursor substance upon which the R h genes act to form the Rh antigenic determinants on red blood cells.

“…This may be caused by the increased reticulo cytes and polychromatic cells which are able to withstand increased osmotic stress because of their large corpuscu lar volume. However, in view of the well documented shortened post-transfusion survival [14,16,17], it was felt that frozen recovered blood should not be used for exchange transfusion. There is a small number of Rh null individuals on record in the world.…”

“…The antibody reacts well by saline, albumin and enzyme methods but not by the antiglobulin method. Over 400 cell samples were tested and the only negative reactors were R. S.'s own cells, two other available Rhnuii samples [12,14] and three available -D-j-D-samples.…”
