Five sec tions from the Kielce Re gion of the Holy Cross Moun tains and one core from a bore hole drilled in the nearby west ern Me so zoic Mar gin re veal the best rec og nized de pos its from the De vo nian/Car bon if er ous bound ary in ter val. In four sec tions: Ruda Strawczyñska, Bolechowice IG 1, Zarêby IG 2 and Kowala, the De vo nian/Car bon if er ous bound ary is lo cated within a con tin u ous se ries of deep-wa ter car bon ates, whereas in the two re main ing: Ostrówka Quarry and the Jab³onna IG 1 borehole, the De vo nian/Car bon if er ous bound ary in ter val con tains strati graphic gaps re sult ing from lack of de po si tion in sub marine con di tions. The biostratigraphic po si tion of the analysed up per most De vo nian and low er most Car bon if er ous suc ces sion is de ter mined by as sem blages of cono donts, micro spores and deep-wa ter ostracodes of the Thuringian eco type. A dis tinctive suc ces sion of con tem po ra ne ous fauna as sem blages and lithofacies types is trace able from Holy Cross Mts. to Rhenish Mas sif. The main ex tinc tion oc curred dur ing a trans gres sion-pro moted an oxia, which then re verted in glacigenic re gres sion. The anoxic con di tions are well-ex pressed at Bolechowice and Kowala suc ces sions.

The Dunbarella ho ri zon is char ac ter ized by cy clic sed i men ta tion and con se quent fau nal spec trum vari abil ity, typ i cal for Westphalian ma rine ho ri zons of north west ern Eu rope. Palaeontological study of the Dunbarella ho ri zon showed the pres ence of macrofauna rep re sent ing dif fer ent palaeoenvironments, from ma rine to brack ish (non-ma rine) and fresh wa ter con di tions. The ver ti cal sea level fluc tua tions and changes in sea wa ter sa lin ity re sult ing in palaeontological re cord changes do not link with geo chem i cal prox ies. TOC, re dox-sen si tive trace el e ment con cen tra tions, and V/Cr, Ni/Co and V/(V + Ni) ra tios gen er ally sug gest that the Dunbarella ho ri zon sed i ments were de pos ited un der pre dom i nantly oxic con di tions (with lo cal ex cep tions dur ing the ini tial phase of the Dunbarella ingression; Kopina 1 bore hole).

Phyllocarida (Crustacea, Malacostraca) are among the most diversified and widespread Late Devonian arthropods. Although previous studies mention phyllocarid fossils from Late Devonian (Frasnian and Famennian) deposits of the Holy Cross Mountains of south‐central Poland, phyllocarids from the Kowala quarry have not been systematically described. Two new species are described from Kowala strata: Echinocaris bisulcata sp. nov. characterized by oval carapace valves with a short hinge line, cone‐like tubercules on the carapace anterior lobe, two pronounced lateral sulci (ventral and median) and two pairs of short spines on every abdominal segment; and Montecaris marynowskii sp. nov. characterized by two pairs of robust abdominal spines, a telson that is shorter than furcal rami, distal parts of which are parallel to the telson, and a body length approximately four times longer than the telson length. Additionally, an isolated furca identified as Dithyrocaris sp. is described herein. Damage observed in the holotype specimen of Montecaris marynowski sp. nov. is consistent with a healed injury, possibly caused by predatory fish. Notes concerning the global occurrences of montecaridids, echinocaridids and the genus Dithyrocaris in the Late Devonian are also provided.
