Anterior Cervical Interbody Fusion Using Polyetheretherketone Cage Filled With Autologous and Synthetic Bone Graft Substrates for Cervical Spondylosis: Comparative Analysis Between PolyBone® and Iliac Bone

Abstract: Clinical and radiological outcomes of cervical interbody fusion using a polyetheretherketone cage filled with PolyBone } (Kyungwon Medical Co., Ltd., Seoul, Korea), beta-tricalcium phosphate material, and autologous iliac bone were retrospectively compared in 47 patients who underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) between January 2007 and April 2008. Of these, 23 received iliac bone grafts and 24 received PolyBone. Numeric rating scale and neck disability index were used for clinical outcome a… Show more

“…β-TCP has been a used widely graft material in dental, cranial, and spinal surgery [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ]. In addition, cement type bone graft material, which is composed of β-TCP and polyphosphate, has been used to induce bone regeneration after cranial or spinal surgery [ 12 , 13 , 14 ]. It has also been used as a scaffold because of its high porosity that provides sufficient spaces for newly formed bone to grow after spinal surgery.…”

“…After approximately seven weeks, the commencement of absorption can be identified. Bone cement is commonly employed in orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery [ 12 , 13 , 14 ]. The ideal hardening time of bone cement is less than 5 minutes, and this reaction is not an exothermic reaction.…”

“…Various materials have been proposed as interbody grafts for ACDF surgery to avoid the problems associated with autologous bone grafts12204345). The characteristics of an ideal graft material include immediate structural biomechanical stability and the capacity for subsequent osteogenesis 152835). Titanium, carbon fiber, and PEEK are the most commonly used materials for cervical interbody cages.…”

“… 59 Sugawara et al 37 used cylindrical titanium cages packed with β-TCP in 57 patients and found no dislocation or material-related complications, in contrast to the study by Zagra et al 59 They reported that the fusion rate was significantly higher in the β-TCP compared with HA at 6-month (46% vs 24%) and 1-year follow-up (69% vs 49%); however, the fusion rate was similar between groups at 2-year follow-up (94% vs 90%). 37 Park and Roh 60 compared the efficacy of iliac autograft with PEEK cages filled with β-TCP. After 24 months, fusion had occurred in 22 of 24 patients treated with β-TCP and in 22 of 23 patients with iliac autograft.…”
