Anterior segment optical coherence tomography of intraocular lens opacification

Abstract: Postoperative opacification of a hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) is an uncommon complication. A 57-year-old diabetic female who had undergone phacoemulsification with IOL implantation in her right eye 16 years back presented with diminution of vision in the same eye for 3 years. Significant IOL opacification was observed clinically and anterior segment optical coherence tomography clearly delineated the intraoptic deposits, sparing the haptics, and edges of the optic. IOL explant and exchange was pe… Show more

“…All "Hydrosmart" Lentis IOLs from the model type L-, LU-, and LS and starting with the serial number "20 000" produced before the year 2012 were recalled. Choudhry et al mentioned in their recently published case report that it is important to differentiate IOL opacification from posterior capsule opacification and anterior lens epithelial cell proliferation [17]. YAG laser treatment in cases of lens opacification can jeopardize the IOL exchange operation, leading to vitreous-associated complications and an inability to implant the new lens in the bag.…”
