Anthraquinone Derived Cholesterol Linked Imidazole Gelator in Visual Sensing of Picric Acid

Abstract: Anthraquinone derived cholesterol linked imidazole 1 has been designed and synthesized. The extensive p-stacking exerted by aromatic surface and the hydrophobic interaction from cholesterol surface tune the molecular aggregation in solvents like benzene, toluene, 1,2-dichlorobenzene and nitrobenzene that results in gelation. Nongelation behaviour of compound 2, devoid of cholesterol motif, signifies the role of cholesterol surface in self aggregation. In the presence of 2 equiv. amounts of PA, the The nitroben… Show more

“…Utilising their fluorescence and self-assembling properties, benzimidazole-based gels are successfully demonstrated as novel functional materials. For example, a family of alkylpyridinylium benzimidazole derivatives was synthesised in order to examine its gelation properties [48], while several fluorescent π-gelators based on benzimidazole are presented as stimuli responsive systems and sensors [49][50][51][52][53]. Ghosh et al presented sensing system for Ag + based on the cholesterol-appended benzimidazole.…”

“…Compounds 1 and 2 were achieved according to the Scheme . Initially, 1,2‐diamino anthraquinone was reacted with 4‐hydroxybenzaldehyde to give the intermediate phenolic compound 3 . The phenolic –OH in 3 was then protected with different silyl reagents to afford compounds 1 and 2 in appreciable yields.…”

“…Compared to other conventional methods such as GC‐MS, [22,23] LC‐MS, [24] electrochemical [25] or SERS [26] techniques optical methods such as absorbance or fluorescence have been very popular owing to the advantages associated with high sensitivity, selectivity, rapid response in real time and the advantage of on‐site portability. Additionally, some supramolecular gelators are also reported for naked eye PA detection [27–29] …”
