Anti–Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1 Activity and Phenolic Content of Crude Ethanol Extract and Four Corresponding Fractions of Quercus brantii L Acorn

Abstract: This research was aimed to evaluate anti–herpes simplex virus type-1 (anti-HSV-1) activity of crude ethanol extract and 4 corresponding fractions of Quercus brantii acorn in vitro. Crude ethanol extract was prepared and subjected to fractionation with different polarity. Anti-HSV-1 activity was evaluated on baby hamster kidney cell line using MTT assay. The inhibitory effect of the plant materials on adsorption and/or post-adsorption stages of HSV-1 replication cycle were determined. Regression analysis was us… Show more

“…Another interesting study evaluated the anti-HSV-1 activity of the fruit chloroform extract of the flowering plant Quercus brantii Lindl. Their results verified that this extract had a high amount of condensed tannins, which exert a potent inhibitory effect (IC 50 2.9 μg/ml), they attributed that due to their ability to prevent the viral entry (Karimi et al, 2017). Arunkumar and Rajarajan (2018) performed a bioactivity-guided fractionation for the ethanolic extract of the fruit peel of Punica granatum L., where the main bioactive compound isolated was the punicalagin (PUG), which exerted a surprising result by 100% anti-HSV-2 activity at 31.25 μg/ml.…”

“…Recently, the potential activity of Quercus brantii Lindl. fruit chloroform extract against HSV-1 was evaluated on baby hamster kidney cell line (Karimi, Rafieian-Kopaei, Moradi, & Alidadi, 2017). Results showed an IC 50 2.9 μg/ml and a selective index for HSV-1 of 53.8.…”

“…Total phenolic and flavonoid amounts of S. aromaticum extract was 255.8±3.95 mg GAE/g and 63.9±2.35 mg RUT/g respectively. Phenolic compounds have been shown to have antibacterial and anti-viral activities [34,[37][38][39][40]. S. aromaticum is one of the richest sources of phenolic compounds such as gallic acid, eugenol and eugenol acetate [41].…”
