ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY TEST SEA CUCUMBER EXTRACT (Holothuria scabra) SIDAYU COAST GRESIK USING DISK DIFFUSION METHOD

Abstract: <p>Sea cucumber (<em>Holothuria scabra</em>) is one kind of sea cucumbers that contains of bioactive compound that can inhibit bacteria growth. This research aim to know the effect of methanol and <em>n</em>-hexane extract towards bacterium <em>Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi </em>and<em> Escherichia coli</em> bacterial growth and to identification estimation active compound group.</p><p>Sea cucumbers active compound extraction using mac… Show more

“…Cold kinetic maceration was intended to prevent compound degradation (18) . Nevertheless, some loss of secondary metabolites can occur when drying sea cucumbers, preparation with fresh and wet sea cucumbers prevents the active compounds from being damaged by high temperatures or contamination during drying (19) .…”

“…These progress is related to the development of awareness of healthy living and every human being wants to live a healthy life. The results of [50] proximate analysis on dried sea cucumbers obtained water content of 7.3%, ash 9.8% and protein 79.59%. While the proximate analysis of fresh sea cucumbers by [25] found the water content was 87.03% water, protein 76.64%, fat 4.16%, ash 14.34% and carbohydrates 4.93%, and the results of [64] research obtained the protein content of wet sea cucumbers was 44-55%.…”

“…Several studies found that H. scabra has medicinal properties and benefits. H. scabra nhexane extracts has been shown to inhibit Escherichia coli bacterial growth (Arifin et al, 2013). Another study found that H. scabra extract has anticancer activity, which is shown by its ability to induce apoptosis against human glioblastoma cell lines.…”

“…Dried sea cucumbers contain 82% protein, 1.7% fat, 8.9% water and 4.8% carbohydrate. Sea cucumbers also has several active ingredients, including triterpene glycosides (saponin), chondroitin sulphate, glycosaminoglycan, sterol, glucose sulphate triterpenes, sulphate polysaccharides, peptides, proteins (gelatin and collagens), hydrosalicylate, glycoproteins, lectin, phenols, and flavonoids (Arifin et al, 2013). The main saturated fatty acids contained in H. scabra is palmitic acid, and the main unsaturated fatty acids contained in H. scabra is arachidonic acid (Yahyav et al, 2012).…”
