Antibacterial Capacity and Identification of Bioactive Compounds by GCMS of Allium Cepa

Abstract: Objective: Plants offer a novel source for the isolation of a wide variety of medicinal agents. Allium cepa commonly known as onion is very well known medicinal plants and we investigated the antibacterial activity of different extracts and their phytochemical analysis by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS). Methods:The extracts of A. cepa prepared in six different solvents was analyzed for antibacterial activity against nine American type cell culture (ATCC) reference bacterial strains i.e. Shigella f… Show more

“…Momoh et al [5] study shows that n-Hexadecanoic acid has antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory activities. Powered red onion extracted with six different organic solvents (methanol, acetone, chloroform, benzene, petroleum ether and ethyl acetate) were analyze for their chemical constituent using GC-MS. A total of 43 compounds were identified by GC-MS analysis and out of them dodecanoic acid was found common in all the extracts [22]. Yadav et al [22] study also shows that the extracts contained 9,12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z,Z)-, methyl ester, Hexadecanoic acid and Hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester which were found in our study and the extracts poses antibacterial activities.…”

“…Bacillus subtilis were resistant while the most sensitive was Candida albicans [23]. "Allium cepa methanol extract shows good antibacterial activity against different bacterial strains and the methanol extract was found most potent against K. pneumonia and S. marcescens with the zone of inhibition of 26±0.76 mm for both strains" [22].…”

“…They may be produced by the plant defense itself from stress as secondary metabolites. These phytoprotectants proved to possess pharmacological activity acts in similar away as synthetic drugs [12]. The palmitic acid reported possessing anticancer activity, antimicrobial, and nematicide activity.…”
