Antibodies to retroviral proteins in autoimmune connective tissue disease. Relation to clinical manifestations and ribonucleoprotein autoantibodies

Abstract: Objective. To study the relationship between antibodies that recognize human retroviral proteins and the presence of clinical features and ribonucleoprotein antibodies in patients with autoimmune connective tissue diseases (CTDs).Methods. Antibodies against native human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and human T cell leukemiahymphoma virus type I, recombinant HIV-1 Nef protein, and ribonucleoprotein antigens were determined by immunoblot of sera from 65 prospectively studied patients with definite ur su… Show more

“…This is in accordance with previous findings of correlations of anti-RNP (38,56) and of antiretroviral antibodies (18,30) with disease activity in patients with SLE and overlap syndromes. This is particularly interesting in view of a recent observation linking apoptosis to disease activity in SLE.…”

“…Involvement of retroviral elements in the triggering of autoimmunity has been suspected based on the discovery of I) cross-reactive antibodies to gag (13,1618), env (19,20), and nefproteins (18) of human retroviruses in patients with autoimmune disease (21)(22)(23), and 2) autoimmunity syndromes in patients infected by human retroviruses (24). Amino acid sequence similarities between certain nonhuman retroviral g a g proteins and human autoantigens, (U 1)snRNP (25), topoisomerase I (26), and La (27) have suggested the possibility that the natural targets of cross-reactive antibodies in patients with autoimmune disease may correspond to endogenous retroviruses (ERV).…”

“…Antibodies reactive with HIV or HTLV Gag (CA, p24) are common in patients with autoimmune diseases such as MS, SS, and SLE (369,407,477,478). In general, anti-Env antibodies are not present in these individuals, although sera from patients with mixed connective tissue disease are reported to contain neutralizing antibodies that block HIV infection (127).…”

“…There are various patients who may have a falsepositive HIV-1 result by EIA and/or an indeterminate western blot result, including those who have received blood products or who have circulating antibodies related to another condition such as an autoimmune disease [3]. Indeed, circulating immune complexes have been detected in adult patients receiving hemodialysis [4].…”
