“…Epilepsy and psychotic changes may be seen in some patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (Harvey, Shulman, Tumulty, Conley, and Schoenrich, 1954;Jessar, Lamont-Havers, and Ragan, 1953;Larson, 1961). Polyneuritis may result from an abnormal immune mechanism, also from disseminated sclerosis (Raskin 1955;Frick, 1954). One example of each of these lesions was seen in our patients.…”

“…Even more specific results were claimed by Steffen et al (1955) using an anti-human globulindeviation technique. It is worth stressing that in all of these five investigations the effective antigens were obtained from multiple sclerotic brains whereas human brain tissue from normal or cerebral arteriosclerosis patients gave much lower positive rates in the studies of Steiner (1935), Raskin (1955), and Ahrengot (1957) and we likewise obtained negative results with lyophilized normal human (and animal) brain tissue tested against sera from 45 M.S. cases, including 6 suspected early cases and one neuromyelitis optica (Lumsden et al 1950).…”

“…41 % gave positive results as against only 3 % in 1,340 controls. Raskin (1955), from the U.S.A., using a battery of six 'antigens' obtained positive results in twice Steiner's frequency, viz. in 83% of 120 M.S.…”

“…Complement-fixing antibrain antibodies have been found at a significantly higher frequency in MS sera than in sera from controls when using alcohol extracts of formalinized MS brain tissues as antigens ( Sachs & Steiner 1934, Roemer et al 1953). Raskin (1955) reported that M S sera contained complement-fixing antibrain antibodies in significantly higher frequency than control sera when tested with antigen consisting of alcohol extracts of M S brain. Raskin found that only M S sera, not control sera, contained complement-fixing antibrain antibodies when tested with antigen consisting of alcohol extracts of normal brain.…”
