Anticancer Effects of Extracts from the Fruit of Morinda Citrifolia (Noni) in Breast Cancer Cell Lines

Abstract: Morinda citrifolia L. (NONI) fruits have been used for thousands of years for the treatment of many health problems including cancer, cold, diabetes, flu, hypertension, and pain. Plant extracts have reported several therapeutic benefits, but extraction of individual compound from the extract often exhibits limited clinical utility as the synergistic effect of various natural ingredients gets lost. They generally constitute polyphenols and flavonoids. Studies have suggested that these phytochemicals, especially… Show more

“…Cycle cell analysis carried out to check the synergistic effect of Noni and MTX on HeLa cell lines showed an increment in sub G0/G1 population indicating the occurrence of apoptosis which was in concurrence to decrement in the percentage of viable cells in MTT and clonogenic assays. Sharma et al (2016) reported that cell cycle distribution in MCF -7 and MDA-MB-231 cell when exposed to Noni ethyl acetate extract at IC 50 for 24, 48, and 72 h showed a noticeable increase in the G1/S phase in a time-dependent manner [20]. They have reported 81% apoptotic cells which are comparable to our results for the same time duration [22].…”

“…Noni has been identified for its antiproliferative potential against tumor cells. In accordance, if plant extracts and their constituents have an ability to inhibit cancer cells without disturbing normal cells, they can have an immense potential in the treatment of cancer [24,25]. The synergistic combinations of Noni with existing anticancer drugs can enhance efficacy, reduce side effects, boost immune modulation, as well as abrogate drug resistance.…”

“…M. citrifolia fresh leaf extract exhibited an in vitro inhibitory effect on the lineage cells of human epidermoid carcinoma (KB), human cervical carcinoma (HeLa), MCF‐7, human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) and Vero cells and can act as a food supplement in the chemoprevention of cervical and epidermoid cancer (Thani et al , ). Its ethyl acetate fraction extract inhibited MCF‐7 and MDA‐MB‐23 cell proliferation, both of which are associated with mammary adenocarcinoma (Sharma et al , ).…”

“…Various reports are available for use of this plant for treatment of illness such as diabetes, blood pressure, cancers, arthritis, poor digestion etc. (Singh et al, 1984;Bruggnecate, 1992;Solomon, 1999;Whistler, 1992;Wang et al, 2002;Brown, 2012;Lee et al, 2012;Fletcher et al, 2013;Saminathan et al, 2013a;Saminathan et al, 2014b;Sharma et al, 2016). However, there is less information on the scientific validation of the Morinda fruits viz.…”
