Anticoagulant effects and the persistence of brodifacoum in possums (Trichosurus vulpecula)

Abstract: Brodifacoum was administered to possums at a sub-lethal dose of 0.1 mg/kg to assess its persistence in blood, muscle, and liver. Only 1 of 68 possums died at this dose level. However, significant increases in one-stage prothrombin (OSP) and activated partial prothrombin times (APP) confirmed that the possum is susceptible to the anticoagulant effects of brodifacoum. Trace amounts of brodifaooum were detected in plasma for 35 days. Substantial concentrations of brodifacoum were retained in the liver for 8 month… Show more

“…The persistence of brodifacoum levels in living rats for at least three months after the removal of poison baits means that they provide a continuing source of secondary poisoning for mustelids, long after the end of the poisoning programme. As trapping ended in July, our persistence estimate for rats is a minimum, but Eason et al (1996) found that substantial sub-lethal concentrations of brodifacoum were retained in the livers of possums for eight months.…”

“…It is extremely persistent in liver and to a lesser extent, muscle tissue (Eason et al 1996). The relationship between the dose of brodifacoum ingested and the level retained in the liver is complex, varies among individuals and is poorly understood (Hegdal & Colvin 1988;Colvin et al 1991).…”

“…Originally we had planned to use brodifacoum as our rat control toxin for at least another year, but when the results from the toxin assays revealed traces of this persistent and cumulative poison (Eason et al 1996;Eason 1999) in the livers of the kiwi chicks, we decided to opt for less persistent toxins to reduce any risks to native fauna. The difficulty was that we were trialling toxins and bait formulations that had, with the exception of 1080, rarely (if ever) been used to control rodents in New Zealand before.…”

“…Compound Sample Eason et al 1996. Wairarapa in June 1994 (Meenken & Booth 1997). To assess the risk of secondary poisoning, samples of the stomach and their contents from 1080-poisoned possum carcasses were collected up to and including 75 days after the control operation.…”
