Antidepressant Drugs: Highly Sensitive and Validated Spectrophotometric Technique

Abstract: A simple, rapid, selective and highly sensitive spectrophotometric method is described for the quantitative determination of the tricyclic antidepressant drugs, desipramine hydrochloride (DPH), clomipramine hydrochloride (CPH) and imipramine hydrochloride (IMH) in pure and in pharmaceutical preparations. The proposed method is based on the bromination of above drugs with known excess of bromine. The unreacted bromine is determined based on its ability to bleach the dye Eiochrome blue black R quantitatively at … Show more

“…The above principle is used for the assay of many pharmaceutical compounds using bromate-bromide mixture and dyes as analytical reagents. [21][22][23][24][25][26][27] In the present investigation, a known excess of bromine, generated ), beyond which the absorbance remained constant (Figure 4). So, a concentration of 50 μg mL -1 methyl orange was used in method I.…”

“…Moreover, for the methods described in our work, color is generated by the direct reaction of the TCA donor with the p-benzoquinone acceptor, whereas other published methods quantify TCAs in an indirect manner, relying on deliberately added dyes that are partially bleached by the excess of a reagent not consumed in a direct reaction with the antidepressant [67,68].…”
