Antifungal activity and phytochemical screening of extracts fromPhoenix dactyliferaL. cultivars

Abstract: In this study, the rachis extracts of eight date palm Phoenix dactylifera L. cultivars were analysed by phytochemical screening and bioautography on Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. albedinis (Foa). The choice of cultivars was based on their reaction to Foa (resistant, tolerant and sensitive). Phytochemical screening was realised for flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids and coumarins. Antifungal effects were mostly represented by dichloromethanic extracts (seven out of nine inhibition zones). The best results were represen… Show more

“…A number of in vitro and in vivo studies have been performed to substantiate their use in folk medicine [1,2]. Date extracts were shown to possess a myriad of pharmacological properties such as antioxidant [3], anti-inflammatory [4], antiatherogenic [5], hepatoprotective [6], anticancer [6], nephroprotective [7], antimicrobial [8], antiallergic [9], immunostimulatory [10], neuroprotective [11], antifungal [12], antimutagenic [13] and gastrointestinal transition stimulatory activity [14]. Date supplementation was shown to be beneficial in Alzheimer's disease transgenic mice model [15].…”

“…Several medicinal properties have been reported for the date palm such as antiatherogenic and antioxidant activity ( Chaira et al, 2009 ), antiviral activity ( Jassim and Naji, 2010 ), gastroprotective effects ( Al-Qarawi et al, 2003 , 2005 ), antimutagenic properties ( Vayalil, 2002 ), and hepatoprotective effects ( Saafi et al, 2011 ). There are plenty of published manuscripts describing other medicinal and pharmacological activities of date palm fruits such as its anti-inflammatory effect ( Boghdadi et al, 2012 ; Metwaly et al, 2012 ), immuno-modulatory activity ( Karasawa et al, 2011 ), antimicrobial effect ( Boulenouar et al, 2011 ), neuroprotective activity in diabetic peripheral neuropathy ( Zangiabadi et al, 2011 ), and anticancer activity ( Elberry et al, 2011 ).…”
