Antimicrobial Capacity and Surface Alterations Using Photodynamic Therapy and Light Activated Disinfection on Polymer-Infiltrated Ceramic Material Contaminated with Periodontal Bacteria

Abstract: This study determined the antimicrobial efficiency of light-activated disinfection (LAD) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) on polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) material contaminated with three periodontal bacteria and explored if PDT and LAD cause PICN surface alterations. Sixty PICN discs were contaminated with Tannerella forsythia, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Treponema denticola and randomly divided into five groups (n = 12 samples/each) according to the treatment groups: Group PDT—PDT (630 ± 10 nm d… Show more

“…Similar effects were observed during polymer tests with different disinfection techniques, e.g., photodynamic [ 77 ] or microwave [ 78 ]. Among the two types of analyzed materials, the dedicated material—medical-grade ABS—seemed to be a better candidate for component production using AM techniques.…”

“…Such phenomenon was observed during a longer analysis made by Buozi Moffa et al [22] where there was also no discoloration registered. Using other types of disinfection for polymers such as photodynamic treatment [23] or microwaves [24] would negatively affect the mechanical properties of obtained parts by extending glass temperature or even plasticizing temperature which causes material degradation [25][26][27]. Such phenomena affect the material structure and also decrease its fatigue properties [28][29][30].…”

“…Although the scientific literature has demonstrated a beneficial clinical effect of PDT as single or adjunctive therapy in cases of biofilm-caused diseases such as periodontitis and peri-implantitis, the direct antimicrobial activity has been only been proven for some oral bacterial species [ 24 , 25 , 26 ], mono-microbial biofilms [ 27 ], or non-characterized in vivo biofilms [ 28 , 29 ].…”
