Antimicrobial effectiveness of silver nanoparticles co-stabilized by the bioactive copolymer pluronic F68

Abstract: BackgroundSilver nanoparticles (AgNps) have attracted much interest in biomedical engineering, since they have excellent antimicrobial properties. Therefore, AgNps have often been considered for incorporation into medical products for skin pathologies to reduce the risk of contamination. This study aims at evaluating the antimicrobial effectiveness of AgNps stabilized by pluronic™ F68 associated with other polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP).MethodsAgNps antimicrobial activi… Show more

“…Newer antibiotics may help to offset the onward march of MRSA resistance, but it has become increasingly apparent that new technologies for rapid detection of MRSA carriage and treatment are needed. 7 Nanotechnology might be crucial for drug delivery, and nanoparticles are of high importance in the optimization of drug delivery to target sites in the body. These nanoparticles can potentially be engineered as drug-delivery tools.…”

“…The MIC classic methodology (dilution tests) proposed by Mazzola et al 30 was adapted to 96-well microplates as described by dos Santos et al 7 The bacteria concentration we used to assess antimicrobial effectiveness of GNPs/pre-GNPs was approximately 10 4 CFU/mL. The minimum inhibitory concentration was considered the percentage of the original GNP/pre-GNP dispersion in the medium.…”

“…The polymeric materials are used almost exclusively as stabilizers in the presence of different reducing agents. Polysaccharides, polycations, 23 polyamino acids 24 as well as other non-ionic water-soluble polymers 25 were successfully employed for such a purpose with resulting biological activity of the hybrid materials evaluated. Alternatively, when nitrogen-containing polymers are incorporated into the process, they can simultaneously act as reducing and stabilizer agent while imparting unique properties to the manufactured colloidal systems.…”

“…Drinking water often contains a broad range of both types of bacteria (Gram-negative and Gram-positive). Therefore, the treatment of water in which both types are likely to be present with a disinfectant that has been reported to be more effective against Gram-negative bacteria makes it difficult to achieve complete inactivation of bacteria (Shahverdi et al, 2007;Theivasanthi and Algar, 2011;dos Santos et al, 2012). Consequently, this approach will compromise the effectiveness of the disinfectant and increase the amount required.…”
