Antimicrobial resistance and epidemiology ofEscherichia coliin broiler breeder chickens

Abstract: Escherichia coli isolates were obtained from two flocks of broiler breeder chickens beginning at 1 day old. Antimicrobial sensitivities were determined and isolates were grouped on the basis of their antibiogram patterns. In both flocks there was an initial dramatic shift in the antimicrobial resistance patterns of the E. coli isolates which changed from sensitive to multiresistant. Both flocks were given spectinomycin in drinking water during the first 3 days on the rearer farm. Statistical analysis of the E.… Show more

“…High resistance rates were also noted with TMP + SMX and chloramphenicol in E. coli isolated from poultry despite the fact that the latter is not licensed for veterinary use in Saudi Arabia. This again could be associated with the misuse of spectinomycin as reported by Ginns et al . (1996) .…”

“…E1043 was obtained 2 weeks later from a bird in the same flock and was resistant to most of the antimicrobial agents tested. The emergence in the flock of multiresistant E. coli strains, like E1043, was possibly due to the prophylactic administration of Linco-Spectin (lincomycin 222g/kg + spectinomycin 445g/kg; Ginns et al, 1996).…”

“…The cloacal isolates were representative of the dominant E. coli population in the broiler breeder flock at the time of collection (Ginns et al, 1996). E956 was collected from a healthy 1-day-old bird and was sensitive to all the antimicrobial agents tested.…”

“…11 Although spectinomycin has limited applications in humans, veterinary use of the drug was found to be associated with crossresistance to other antimicrobial agents. 14 Lincomycin is a lincosamide antibiotic used in poultry for therapy of penicillin G-resistant organisms and anaerobic infections, or for growth promotion. 2 Although this drug is not commonly used in humans, its derivative, clindamycin, is widely employed in the treatment of Bacteroides fragilis infections.…”
