Antimicrobial Resistance and Its Spread Is a Global Threat

Abstract: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a challenge to human wellbeing the world over and is one of the more serious public health concerns. AMR has the potential to emerge as a serious healthcare threat if left unchecked, and could put into motion another pandemic. This establishes the need for the establishment of global health solutions around AMR, taking into account microdata from different parts of the world. The positive influences in this regard could be establishing conducive social norms, charting individu… Show more

“…Antibiotics are valuable tools for fighting against bacterial infections. However, antibiotic resistance is a naturally occurring process. According to the CDC 2019 Antibiotic Resistance (AR) Threats Report, infections caused by antibiotic-resistant germs surpassed 2.8 million, with a mortality rate exceeding 35,000 in the U.S. each year .…”

“…Bacterial infections spread around us in the communities, food supplies, water, and soil. However, serious infections, especially with multidrug-resistant pathogens, are widely dispersed in healthcare facilities like hospitals, clinics, or nursing homes, called healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). , Unfortunately, antibiotics innovation and development entered a dark age after the 1960s because of the rapid emergence of resistance . Consequently, the generation of novel medications to control and treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens has become a pressing priority for the scientific community.…”

“…Drug resistance increases the challenge around disease management, which has been documented to compromise the human immune system and increase complications and vulnerability after complicated surgeries involving cancer, knee replacement, dialysis, etc. [ 25 ]. Thus, monitoring drug-resistant E. coli from pigeons also takes great significance in maintaining public health safety in this region.…”

“…The development of AMR has been documented to be a natural process to enable survival of the bacteria, but has been fueled by human activities, including inappropriate prescription, excessive use of antibiotics as growth supplements in livestock, and the availability of few new antibiotics [ 26 ]. The mounting evidence around antibiotic usage practice being a crucial risk towards drug resistance necessitates the need for inculcating habitual and appropriately guided clinical management practices [ 25 ]. We should strengthen the feeding and management of pigeons, scientifically use veterinary antibiotics, reduce the emergence of numerous resistance mechanisms from overuse of antibiotics, and prevent its further spread to other host animals or humans.…”
