Antimicrobial sensitivity profile and bacterial isolates among suspected pyogenic meningitis patients attending at Hawassa University Hospital: Cross-sectional study

Abstract: Background Bacterial meningitis is a serious inflammation of the meninges. Antimicrobial therapy on early cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination has an important role in diagnosis. The disease is still challenging in developing countries because of poor (diagnostic set-up, socioeconomic conditions, management), and misuse of antimicrobial therapy results in emerging antimicrobial-resistant strains. Therefore, this hospital based cross sectional study was aimed to assess the antimicrobial sensiti… Show more

“…Therefore, the use of antibiotics deserves serious consideration for the reduction in antibiotic resistance in China. Not surprisingly, there were no LNZ- or VAN-resistant S. pneumoniae isolates found in our study, which coincided with previous studies [ 11 13 , 36 , 37 ].…”

“…We also observed that the resistance rate of S. pneumoniae isolates to PEN was 82.8%, and the ratio increased from 75.0% in 2016 to 87.5% in 2018, which was lower than the values reported in Beijing (95.7%) [ 35 ] and Ethiopia (100%) [ 36 ] but was higher than the values from other studies, including those in Yunnan (31.2%) [ 11 ] and Iran (21.0%) [ 37 ]. S. pneumoniae had resistance rates of 41.0% to CTX and 50.0% to CRO in the present study.…”

“…had 100% sensitivity to vancomycin, teicoplanin and linezolid in the present study. Sixty percent (3/5) of the Streptococcus pneumoniae strains were resistant to penicillin in our study, while 5 Streptococcus pneumoniae strains were completely resistant to penicillin in an Ethiopian study [ 30 ]. The identified high level of resistance to penicillin, which is mainly used as a standard regimen for the empiric treatment of CNS infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae , could create difficulties with regard to clinical treatment.…”

“…In a recent study, Tigabu and coworkers reported high resistance (66.80%) in S. aureus against erythromycin and amoxicillin among adult BM patients in Gondar. 42 Another study conducted by Assegu Fenta and his group declared that high resistance of S. aureus was reported against amoxicillin (100%). 43 The high resistance occurs due to exposure of broad range of antibiotics, self-medication, and incomplete dosage of antibiotics, leading S. aureus to develop new cellular processes to evade effects of drugs.…”
