Antimicrobial Susceptibility and Clonal Relation Between Acinetobacter baumannii Strains at a Tertiary Care Center in Turkey

Abstract: Background:Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen, related with nosocomial infections such as bacteremia, urinary tract infections, and ventilator-associated pneumonia. Multidrug resistant (MDR) A. baumannii strains are first line causes of infection, especially in patients hospitalized at intensive care units (ICUs). Infection with MDR A. baumannii strains has a longer duration at ICUs and hospitals. There are studies using molecular methods which can differentiate MDR A. baumannii strains at th… Show more

“…Despite MLST and PFGE being highly discriminative genotyping methods, PCR-based DNA fingerprinting techniques have advantages of performance ease and economic viability [2,6,12]. To date, there have been many studies describing different PCR-based methods to type MDR-AB [47][48][49]. In general, the ERIC-PCR method is a common, easy, and quick fingerprinting technique for characterising A. baumannii isolates [2,48,49].…”

“…Clonal dissemination of carbapenem resistant A. baumannii was previously reported in different studies. It has been establish that multidrug resistant of A. baumannii isolates with similar genotype can disseminate among various wards, different hospitals and even among cities ( 4 , 10 , 12 , 49 - 51 ). In the current study, the vast majority of carbapenem resistant isolates (94/97, 96.9%) belonged to one of the four dominant genotypes indicating clonal dissemination of resistant isolates in the studied hospitals.…”

“…For this reason, it can cause severe infections in all settings of hospitals especially in intensive care units. Besides the periods in which the compliance with hand hygiene and standard isolation procedures decrease, application of mechanical ventilation to patients, surgical operation, application of invasive procedures, immunosuppressive treatment regimens and long stays give rise to an increase in MDR A. baumannii colonization and infection [4].…”
