“…These results suggest an important role of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxides as immobilisers of Pb under oxidising conditions, but not in contrast to Sb as previously described by Belzile et al (2001). Cappuyns et al (2021) reported very similar results in mining waste and soils in an Sb mine in Vietnam, where less than 1% of the total Sb content in samples was released to water during short-term leaching tests. Here long-term leaching tests were performed with the La Balanzona soils, whose duration allowed microbial processes to occur, and revealed greater Sb mobility under oxidising conditions vs. reducing conditions.…”

“…Therefore, low Sb bioaccessibility may have resulted from inner sphere complexes of this element with Al/Fe/clay. While bioaccessibility studies are limited for Sb impacted matrices, Cappuyns et al, [ 75 ] reported low Sb solubility following Sb leaching behavior assessment from mine waste, slag, and soil samples near slag heaps (47 – 15,699 mg/kg Sb, n = 8). Cappuyns et al, [ 75 ] leached samples in a range of pH representing acidic, neutral and alkaline solutions such as deionized water, solutions of calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) and disodium phosphate (Na 2 HPO 4 ).…”

Antimony solubility was found to be < 1% in Cappuyns et al, [ 75 ], which was attributed to strong sorption to humic acids/Fe oxides and the age of the mine waste type contributing to the increased Sb sorption to the matrix.…”

“…Therefore, for each sample, the extractions were performed on 4 replicates, and after each extraction step, one solid residue from each sample was put aside for mineralogical analysis. Additionally, the solid residue remaining after the 3 rd extraction step was dried and digested according to the multi-acid digestion procedure as described in [20]. The solutions obtained in the different steps were kept in a fridge (4°C) until analysis, which was performed within 2 days after the last extraction step.…”
